If you showed how to use a variable to automatically put the date in the filename. We could then save the snippet for reuse.

Nice to see some basics on here. Some of the material is so bizarre, which is good because we need that sometimes. But its nice to reset and go back to 101 level stuff.

I had always thought you had to be in single user mode to do a backup. Is that a holdover from earlier times or a complete misconception?

I was thinking the same thing about using a variable to automatically put the date in the filename. That would be most helpful. Great video, as always.

Excellent, just learning to become a DBA and this was very timely and informative.

947C03EA21 - misconception I'm afraid, going far as far as I've worked with SQL (v6.5) an online backup has been possible. Definitely different than we expect from working with a document metaphor, or even Access.

You might have mentioned that when T-SQL is used, the message at the end gives the backup "speed", which can be useful.

Leon on 7/23/2010
Very clear. But what does the 'N' mean after 'DISK =' in TSQL?
