I had always thought you had to be in single user mode to do a backup. Is that a holdover from earlier times or a complete misconception?

947C03EA21 - misconception I'm afraid, going far as far as I've worked with SQL (v6.5) an online backup has been possible. Definitely different than we expect from working with a document metaphor, or even Access.

You might have mentioned that when T-SQL is used, the message at the end gives the backup "speed", which can be useful.
