Practice Your Restore Skills

It's easy to get spoiled by doing restores from within Management Studio. What happens when a client running SQL 2005 sends you some *.bak files to restore? We'll show you how we did it, and then you can give it a try yourself since we're attaching all the bak files to this video!

Why did you not mention that you can restore without using the diff and only the tlogs and why you can do that. You missed the opportunity to bring home that point. You are not forced to use the diff backup but if you did you would have speed up the restore process by elimanatin the need to use one or more of the tlogs in the restore process.

It was an okay video. I've seen better videos from him. He did not sound commited. Anyhow, he also skipped what a differential would have done? Etc. Informational still of-course.

(1) Why did you not show RESTORE ... WITH HEADERONLY to determine where DIFF backup "fits in" ?? -- (2) I thought the compatibility level of a database (in your case 9.0) is preserved when restoring to a later version. What is upgraded? Will the compatibility level still show as 9.0, or will it be 10.5 ? Answer (or pointer to answer) to DrDianaDee@verizon.net would be appreciated.

Nice video. If we want to restore the Differential backup, what is the procedure.

Good stuff again.
