Takes Query Plan Analysis and Performance Monitoring to a New Level

Creating a Performance Counter Log

This is a short video by Jack Corbett that demonstrates how to capture performance data to disk directly rather than just displaying it as is usually done in the Perfmon view. This is a great technique for capturing data for a deeper analysis or for creating a baseline.

Need to watch couple of times to understand the concept.

Jonathan on 5/8/2009
seems to not go far enough, why those counters, what properties would you expect for those counters, what to do if the counters are showing unusual stats

Mark Hodgson on 5/8/2009
Only half of the story - how about using the data?

John O'Sullivan on 5/8/2009
Too short, could have covered reasons for selecting the chosen counters.

Steve Harris on 5/8/2009
very light. not a lot of information like how or why you would use this kind of information.

Gary Fairchild on 5/8/2009
It would be nice to know what versions of SQL this is applicable too.

Larry on 5/8/2009
The answer wasn't completely accurate. You can write perfmon data to a database, too, which is handy for trending. There was no practical application. If someone implemented this, they'd end up with a log file and run out of disk space if they didn't have previous knowledge of how perfmon works.

senthilmurugan on 5/8/2009
kinldy could you post video on SMS server 2003

luther smith on 5/11/2009
Click, click.

4B47653576 on 5/17/2009
nice to see it imported and analysed afterwards

John O'Sullivan on 5/19/2009
very brief

3EAA01C6D4 on 9/12/2009
very weak, and not useful:(

dfwdba on 9/13/2009
I would like to see some more videos on perfmon counter logs and what the different counters mean.

Gulzar on 3/11/2010
I think this is not enough counter we need more counter also for memory uses, etc. please can you elobrate the performance with complete counter which we can use in SQL Server performance troubleshooting

Jeffrey Lin on 5/6/2010
please search for "Integrating Performance Monitors with SQL Server Profiler" to find more info

Raj on 11/26/2010
Nice

Randolph Taylor on 11/26/2010
ok now what do you do with the dATA

E72B0A9423 on 11/26/2010
needs more description of what and why

Dean Gross on 11/26/2010
It would have been better to include some info about how the collected data can be accessed and used.

Alok Joshi on 11/27/2010
Too fast for a novice.

john alan on 11/28/2010
Ended abruptly - has the video file been truncated?

Iri on 11/28/2010
Great help as always!

Keyur on 11/28/2010
should have been more detailed

Dave on 11/28/2010
Maybe have a display of the results?

Raymond on 11/28/2010
I have NO IDEA what I just learn. That was a very BAD tutorial.

Steve Harris on 11/29/2010
How would you view the profiled information? Why did you pick the stats chosen?

Jack Pines on 11/29/2010
The audio was a little quiet but overall the presentation was excellent.

John Kingery on 11/29/2010
Topic good, but sound poor.

Trent on 11/29/2010
Simple video but the question after the video was not covered in the video itself.

68F61572B6 on 11/29/2010
Too little information

Satyabodhi Densmore on 11/30/2010
Need example of reviewing the collected data

Diana Dee on 12/5/2010
You should have covered collection interval (default 15 seconds) and start automatically now versus start manually later versus scheduling the start time. Mention that if using Perf Log for Profiler integration the time intervals of both captures must overlap.

Mark Redfern on 2/1/2011
Nice if we could see the results and explain there meaning

Trent on 2/1/2011
the answer to the question was not discussed in the video

Robert McEuen on 2/1/2011
Had volume on my computer turned up to max and still had trouble hearing the audio.

Jamshid Nouri on 2/1/2011
graet demo

Marcelo Marim on 2/1/2011
Too short... maybe a little bit more... like showing what you will record... what you use this for??? Thanks

Steve Harris on 2/1/2011
How is this integrated? Why did you pick those couters? How do you view the log? How would you use the log? What was the need in creating the log?

Robert Djabarov on 2/1/2011
That's primitive! You said at the beginning that you will create perfmon counter collection for integration with SQL Profiler...Where is the integration?

Robert Johnson on 2/1/2011
Audio was very poor, I could barely hear the presenter. I had to turn my audio level to 100% and it was still poor.

Steve Powell on 2/2/2011
It looks very different in Windows 7 :-( What if I want to pull this back in alongside a SQL TRACE?

Max on 2/2/2011
Too short.... How would you load this to read it in Profiler, File -> Open ?

ravi on 2/6/2011
good one

mark mcnary on 2/11/2011
could use more depth

Tilahun on 3/12/2011
wawu

Kat on 3/15/2011
This would have been better if some real world applications were mentioned. Like what reason would we need to add this counter or what conditions might best be exposed using this.

AmitBhatia on 5/23/2011
dfgd

Keith Badeau on 6/3/2011
I'd like to see some updated vids on perfmon in Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2.

Maurice Ivory on 6/17/2011
A little short but it gave enough information.
