Replaying a SQL Server Profiler Trace

Many of us have created Profiler traces and saved the result for later analysis or reference, but did you know that with just a little preparation you can add the ability to replay those traces later? Maybe you want to test a new hardware configuration, or see if your query tuning efforts have been successful overall, or even for testing - knowing how to use the Replay functionality in Profiler can be a very useful thing to know.

Great information.

I know with only 2 minutes time you don't have a lot of time to discuss issue related to replay. Just wondering what kind of requirements might there be on replaying a trace, especially if the trace updates the database, or the database has been significately update since the trace file was captured.

Don Tulecki on 4/2/2009
At the end of video, an explanation why there where total 39 events but only 21 replayed would be good. This was not explained, and left me with questions

Patrick on 4/2/2009
What is the purpose of replaying a trace file? Can you just replay a trace file whitout harming the production database on which the trace was made?

lisa on 4/2/2009
How about linking to related videos? Because i don't know how to get to that trace properties box that was displayed, I'm a newbie with the tool but a SQL, I'd like to learn as much as possible.

Suppose during the initial trace that there were queries that did inserts, updates, and/or deletes. Does replaying the trace cause those statements to be re-executed? Is replaying only useful when all the queries were selects?

Jack Corbett on 4/3/2009
Great comments folks. I'll answer the questions in separate comments.

Jack Corbett on 4/3/2009
Greg\Patrick\B.A., Great questions, I appreciate them. When replaying a trace you do not want to do it against Production database as it truly replays the actions, it does not simulate the actions.

Jack Corbett on 4/3/2009
Lisa, Good idea. There are several other Profiler videos on JumpstartTV. You can find many of them by clicking on my name to see my profile, which lists all the videos I have done. Or, you can do a search for Profiler. I am sure the site owners\developers will see your comment and consider adding a related videos section

You should mention why one wants to replay a trace and any sideeffects

I'd be interested to see a video of the different ways a replayed trace can be used to troubleshoot...problems, I guess.

Adam on 4/20/2011
a bit more information on what sort of traces you can run, eg what happend with errors etc.

adityabisoi on 8/29/2011
OK

If the replay creates records or tables, will it create duplicates?

MyDoggieJessie on 8/29/2011
It would be nice to know if replaying a trace actually executes the same statements against the same server...resulting in the exact same demand/load on the server. In a highly transaction environment, it would not be wise to replay a trace during a busy time of the day if it would bring the server to its knees so-to-speak

This was a very simple replay and multiple threads were not used. I was interested in a more advanced replay since i typically see a lot of errors when replaying a trace on my systems.

okk
