The Impact of Stale Statistics

Statistics in SQL Server are a batch, by design they gradually fall out of date until refreshed. What happens when your stats are old enough that you get a less than great query plan? How do you account for stats when looking at a plan? We'll try to show you the answers in our lesson today.

I prefer the video to be in flv format like youtube. while watching the video it gets downloaded to my PC as well. The following are the uses for that: *) When i dont understand something, i can go back and replay the last 30 secs without redownloading that part. *) on a slow connection, I let the video download. and replay it later without any delays within the video.

It would have been worth another minute to explain what to do about it when they're out of whack.

excellent!! it would be great if there were a series on Top 10 issues to look for in an execution plan...just sayin

Travis on 12/26/2009
This is mostly a moot point if auto-update stats is on, and for most databases it should be..If not, create a policy to make sure it is on for all of your databases in case you forget.

I would have liked to see how the execution plan changes when the statistics are updated, and the optimizer decides to use a better technique.

Narrator said "3rd row down ... says Estimated Number of Rows" when hovering over query plan, but actually meant to say "3rd row down ... says Actual Number of Rows."
