I believe a rebuild index will also update statistics with a fullscan. I've heard that if you run an update statistics after an index rebuild that it can actually hurt your performance. However if you have non-indexed stats those will not be updated with an index rebuild.

It would have been nice to explain the difference or why you would use one or the other between doing it in a loop and doing it using sp_updatestats.
